A few years ago, I went to the 17th century Bagby Inn, three miles from Thirsk, close to Sutton Bank and the beautiful landscapes around it. I never went back – enough said.

Enter Fettah Alkoc and Laz Bilgin in 2017, a massive renovation and say hello to the (newly named) Greyhound.
The pair have turned this into a sparklingly fresh place with hints of the past still very much there with the beams and a real fire. There’s a smart-yet cosy restaurant at the back and evidence of further building work for six soon-to-be letting rooms.
Time is needed to soften down the decor; otherwise, the Greyhound is super-welcoming, and I am so impressed by the friendliness throughout our visit.
There is a definite “pub” at the front, and locals gathered around the bar drinking and chatting when we arrived and still there when we left shows this is working. The attractive well-stocked bar has Black Sheep and Tetley’s Cask, wines are decent, with three choices by the glass and colour and more by the bottle, and there’s pretty much everything else you could want to drink.
The food here is good, though we only nibble on a mezze of hot and cold starter dishes in the bar, nursing a pint and a glass of wine. Mains are British pub style, punctuated with several Turkish options, so it’s an eclectic mix and a refreshing change for sure.
How lucky is Bagby?
