“Ooh, you must try the Hare & Hounds, the food’s fab,” says my Staithes chum Jo. I’ve been meaning to for some time – in fact every time I drive through Hawsker – but I’m usually en route to Robin Hood’s Bay or Scarborough.
It’s a long, smartly whitewashed pub with a decent grassed area at the front . Step into a cosy bar on one side and a very pleasant, light-filled dining room on the other. As Jo suggested, it’s predominantly an eating pub, but I was very pleased to see a couple of locals playing dominoes and nursing pints, and a gaggle of walkers with dogs by the open fire in the “snug”.
On the pumps you’ll find Thwaites Wainwright, Theakstons Old Peculiar and Best Bitter and a wide range of bottled beer.
Landlord Matt Boyes served time with Rob Green at his eponymous Whitby restaurant so knows how to put a menu together. All the classics are there – the fish and chips are going to be good, given the location – but you’ll also find slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, seared salmon fillet and Indonesian vegetable curry. Puds-wise, think lemon ricotta cheesecake and a chocolate brownie tower – gird up for this one! Fortunately the coast to coast walk is on the doorstep, and if you fancy two wheels, Trailways Cycle Hire is just across the road.
Turn up for quiz and pie night on Tuesdays, steak night on Wednesdays and fish and chip Fridays. I will definitely be doing one or more of those.
