Pub of the Week: The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

A pub that pushes all the right buttons.
And, no, I am NOT in the pay of the landlord. In fact, I happened along on a freezing cold lunchtime purely by chance, and because the nearby bric-a-brac emporium was firmly shuttered. Knowing that the Kelham was located hereabouts, it seemed only polite to seek it out.
This fine hostelry was once in the very heart of Sheffield’s industrial enterprise.What surrounded it is now all gone, and the Kelham stands defiantly alone. However, even with a derelict patch of land to either side, and a huge car park in front, it still manages to look cheery and inviting.
It also regularly features up there in the CAMRA approval listings, and was Sheffield and Yorkshire Pub of the Year for 2015. The interior décor is a wonderful clutter of pictures, paintings, posters, plaques and plates. There is a glowing fire in the front parlour, and another to the rear. There are wee snugs, communal tables as well as individual ones, sensible old spindle-backed chairs, and a few banquettes.
Best of all, there are at least a dozen real ales on offer, and a pint of Vienna went down particularly well. Bradfield Brewery’s range is also popular in these parts. There’s a well-rounded menu on offer Monday to Saturday. You could have a very filling main course here, and a great pint, and still have ample change from a tenner.
