Pub of the Week: Glen View, Todmorden

He’s not wrong. All the classics are on offer: homemade pies, mixed grill, gammon and eggs, Cumberland sausage, fish and chips. There are hot and cold sandwiches, jacket spuds and a kids’ menu. Vegetarians fare well here too, with seven choices including pumpkin seed and chestnut roast.
You’ve guessed correctly – it’s primarily a dining pub, but there are a couple of real ales: Tetley’s Cask and Moorhouse’s White Witch. On a Thursday lunchtime there are a couple of locals on high stools at the bar enjoying a pint, and the rest of the place is filled with families and walkers tucking into proper Yorkshire portions.
It’s been in the same family for half a century and you can feel the love. The welcome is genuinely warm, and the deeply traditional decor is strangely comforting. Bell-pushes to summon waiters are still in evidence, though no longer functional.
There are three rooms – once separate but now more open plan – and a serving hatch from the bar to the cosy tap room.
Turn up for the popular quiz every Wednesday and the pop quiz every second Friday. The pub’s exterior is festooned with colourful hanging baskets, and there’s a tiny, neat patio at the back. Sometimes, the best places are literally under your nose.
