Leeds mobile street caterer, The Pizza Guy, has become the second ever winner of the 'Woody Award'.

Logs Direct, a wood-fuel provider, have presented the award to the company in recognition for excellence within wood-fired cooking in restaurants and catering sectors.

The Pizza Guy, also known as Simon Walker, is local to Leeds, and is a mobile chef and events caterer.

In ‘Winnie’ his land rover, he provides Pizza across Yorkshire. Simon cooks and serves his pizza from his car, having a wood fire oven fitted within the boot.

Simon’s pizzas use caputo flour, also known as the ‘flour of Naples’, for the dough and San Marzano tomatoes which grow around Mount Vesuvius in Naples for the base.

Within his menu there is always the choice of Margherita pizza, or a simple Mariana as well as a plentiful choice of various toppings and vegetarian options. One of his most popular dishes is the Italian Sausage special.

The Pizza Guy chooses to add wood to the cooking process as he claims it gives an unmistakable taste to his pizzas which can be appreciated by anyone who has enjoyed a wood-fired feast in the Mediterranean.

He received the award on the basis of great customer feedback. This will be the case with all future ‘Woody Award’ winners and how they are judged.

Customers responses to The Pizza Guys’ food were incredibly positive, where one customer said it “took me back to Naples”, proving the authentic nature of the produce.

The Pizza Guy has built recognition and clear approval from Italian customers.

Logs Direct’s director, Stephen Talbot, expressed that they “simply couldn’t ignore the clear approval of Simon’s authentic approach to pizza cooking, which of course includes cooking with wood.’

Simon said: “I’m over the moon to win a Woody.  It’s an amazing bit of recognition for a business that I’ve worked so hard to put together. To also win the prize, purely by coincidence, on our first anniversary, makes it even more special.  It is simply the best birthday present for us and Winnie (the Land Rover!).”

The Pizza Guy can be booked for private parties and weddings. He will also be catering at the following public events within Yorkshire:

The Food and Produce Market at Abbeydale Picture House, Sheffield on Saturday 25th July.

The Cannon Hall Pear Festival, Cawthorne, Barnsley on
