Riverford Organic Farms scoop award for ethical farming in Yorkshire

The company of Riverford have made organic food affordable with their prices being 20% lower than supermarkets. 85% of the boxes are sourced locally, meaning it has never been easier to live more ethically.

Guy Watson founded Riverford almost three decades ago when he used to deliver vegetable boxes to 30 close friends out of the boot of his car in Devon. The company now delivers 47,000 vegboxes a week.

He said: “It is very rewarding to have this accolade from the Observer.”

“For almost 30 years, I have aimed to use the business to make the world a slightly better place, one vegbox at a time.”

“Put simply we want to give people good, fresh, flavoursome, ethically-produced food that they can trust, produced and delivered in a way that gives a fair deal to farmers, animals, customers, staff and the environment.”

As the vegboxes grew in demand Watson didn’t want to expand the Devon farm where it all began. Instead the company joined with existing farms which are now regional farms for Riverford.

One of these includes Home Farm at Newby Wiske in North Yorkshire. The Yorkshire farm delivers more than 4,500 veg boxes a week to customers all over Yorkshire and North England.

Peter Richardson, farmer at Home Farm said: “We’ve always known that our vegboxes are very special. We’ve a real community of customers – they come to us as they want real food that has been produced with respect. It’s fantastic to have Riverford’s work recognised with such a prestigious award.”
