Betty’s of Harrogate, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, is the incontrovertible queen of high teas. Afternoon tea at Bettys is legendary and towering stack of goodies include the traditional petite sandwich slices, home-made scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and three kinds of cake. Pink champagne comes as an optional extra. There are now cafes in York, Harlow Carr, Stonegate, Northallerton and Ilkley, all of them packed on a Saturday afternoon.

Bethany Haresign, the brains behind this chic cafe, trained with Michel Roux at the Waterside Inn in Bray where she cooked for the Queen. The American pancakes are the bees knees.
