This weekend sees the ‘curtain up’ of York’s annual Food Festival unveiling the theme for 2016 of ‘Explore the Taste of York’.

Delicious smells, sights and tastes fill Parliament Street with street food showcasing Yorkshire based companies selling a variety of cuisines including, for the first time, York resident Abuela’s Kitchen selling homemade Mexican food served in banana leaves. You will also find pop up bars and an extensive market featuring the best local produce from the likes of Sand Hutton Asparagus, Niddwick Farm Beef and The Bluebird Bakery.

Whilst you explore the market why not pick up a copy of the Festival’s ‘Explore York’s Food and Drink’ Map (http://www.yorkfoodfestival.com/images/new.pdfs/exploremap.pdf) from our Information Point and discover where you can purchase great Yorkshire food and drink all year round.  Keep an eye on the Festival website for a new feature of the 2016 programme, speciality tastings in local delis, pubs, restaurants and bars.

To entertain the kids this weekend, Little Viking’s have teamed up with kids’ cookery school Crafty Cooks to run a selection of free, food-related kids’ activities on both mornings of the Festival. They will be in the demonstration tent on St Sampson’s Square from 10.30-12.30.

Demonstrations over the taster weekend take place from 1pm and include Chef Stephanie Moon, York Cookery School and York’s Chocolate Story as well as a cocktail demonstration from The Wine Chapter.

The main York Food & Drink Festival will return to celebrate its 20th year, from the 23rd September to the 2nd October.  The large markets will extend to Fossgate on both Saturdays and the Shambles market during the week.  Daily chef demonstrations, a cookery school on King’s Square, kids activities and an extensive events programme take over the city celebrating the tastes, sights and smells of York’s food.

Highlights of the events programme include a Fizz Tasting with wine writer Christine Austin, a 7 course tasting menu with new York restaurant, Skosh, a Sherry Supper with Ambiente Tapas, a Beer Tasting with writer Jeff Evans and a gin tasting with Masterchef finalist Sara Denison Medio.
