Now that the owners of the Brief have moved to bigger premises, local chilli sauce producer and booze aficionado Ian Ibbetson has taken on the building and opened Chilli Devil’s Real Ale and Chilli Bar.
Keeping it simple by serving only four regularly rotated real ales, proper cider and a few bottled ales, Ian hopes to become the latest stop-off on Hull’s burgeoning real ale trail.
He’s off to a fine start as most nights the 22-seat, one-room bar is packed to the rafters. Particularly popular is Tuesday’s open acoustic session, with local musicians beating at the door to perform in the pressure-free, intimate environment.
Food is kept simple too, with just four types of chilli dish available (one veggie, the others always imaginative and inventive) and pies or a posh sausage sandwich for those determined to avoid all manna Mexican. For non-drinkers, coffee comes courtesy of Hull’s own Blending Room.
Chilli plants from around the world grow in the bar window, so even some of the ingredients are produced on site.
