The Hilltop Hotel is a fairly sturdy old place with farm fields between it and the nearest house.

It’s had some ups and downs and some feared it might close for good. Then along came Julie and John Bulcroft, who have turned The Hilltop Hotel around to the engaging, warmly welcoming place that it is today.
They’ve been in residence for some time now, but it wasn’t so long ago that John started chatting to a fellow beer enthusiast about not just buying the nectar in, but maybe brewing it himself. Now at the rear of the pub, is a small but highly productive brewhouse turning out at least six of John’s own ales which are proving extremely popular.
Hardly surprising. A pint of Hilltop Gold was so refreshing and crisp on the palate that it had to be followed by another.
Among John’s many fans are the local branch of Camra, who keep on giving the pub various accolades and awards.
If beer isn’t your tipple, then there’s a good selection of wines and whiskies.
Inside, there are two bars, kept well and decorated with that sort of touch that shows you that a wee bit of thought has gone into it.
Food these days is largely confined to a Sunday roast, which is so popular that the advice is always to book. Julie also runs a renowned pie shop towards the end of the week.
There is plenty of parking and despite the heavy traffic, if you do take your drink outside there are stunning views across the Rother Valley and beyond. A little gem.
