Sisters Jane and Lucy Batham aka Tarte & Berry have expanded their home brownie baking business to making 4000 a week

Tarte & Berry, which specialises in artisan bakery treats, has invested in its first bakery in a bid to increase production and secure a growing rosta of retail clients.

Production has now increased 4-fold and the sisters can now bake over 4000 brownies a week, including their best selling Salted Caramel Brownies, Triple Chocolate Brownies and Raspberry and Almond Bakewell which come in tray bakes of 32.

The brainchild of sisters Jane and Lucy Batham, Tarte & Berry is a Yorkshire-based company selling a range of brownies online and direct to retailers including Friends of Ham, Fodder, Mrs Atha’s, Yay Coffee and the Chilled Events Company. Their treats have received a BBC Good Food Show Award, a Women in Business award from entrepreneur Jacqueline Gold CBE and a Small Business Award from Dragons’ Den Theo Paphitis.

SONY DSCJane swapped a career in marketing to realise her ambition to create sweet treats.  Training at the Gordon Ramsay Tante Marie Culinary Academy, Jane then worked as a pastry chef in several top London restaurants, including The Table in Southwark, and at Betty’s of Harrogate as a confectioner where she finished and decorated their cakes and patisserie.  Lucy’s background is PR and marketing and, upon Jane’s success as a pastry chef, the sisters decided to combine their passion and skills and create a high-end bakery brand.

Jane explains: “During our first twelve months Tarte & Berry was home-based.  There were brownies everywhere – trays and trays of cake, brownies and caramel lined our kitchen and living room. As demand for our treats continued our home was completely taken over by brownies and we were carrying 25kg bags of caster sugar and flour up and down the stairs to our flat! This production unit is the next and necessary step in growing our dream business producing the yummiest treats available.”
