Oh, were that there were far more pubs like the Closed Shop. Unpretentious, impeccably run, traditional and excellent beer, served with a smile.

Unsurprisingly CAMRA is particularly enthusiastic about this place, recently recognising it as pub of the month.
On a fair day, the little, neatly planted beer garden is a delight. Inside, the decoration was updated about three years ago, and the refurbishment included the addition of a kitchen from whence comes some good solid grub, sourced from within the seven hills of the steel city whenever possible.
Someone seems to have been afflicted with a bad case of the whimsies when the menu was being named, because among many treats you will find a Jarvis Cockerel (chicken breast topped with bacon), Cow Then (a best-selling beef burger) and So Wrong, It’s Reyt, which is a combination of the two.
Since the place is owned by Reet Ale, you will not be surprised to discover that its brewery, Blue Bee, also supplies many of the beers to the eight hand pumps. And there is also a good selection of gins from local makers Locksley’s, which come with a variety of infusions and flavourings.
The bars all run off each other, providing a lot of nice little nooks, and there’s a good pool table and a sports TV screen tucked away, so that it doesn’t intrude into the more serious business of supping. But be warned, on weekdays the Closed Shop doesn’t fling its doors wide open until 4pm.
The Closed Shop, 52-54 Commonside, Walkley, Sheffield, S10 1GG. 0114 266 0330.
